Part Two of the Story… 👇
The silence in the bedroom felt heavy enough to crush bone. I stared down at the gray-taped package resting in the open cavity of the mattress, my hands shaking so violently that I dropped the utility knife onto the floorboards. The smell was suffocating—a toxic mixture of dampness, decay, and cheap perfume that seemed to coat the inside of my throat. I backed away until my shoulders hit the cold bedroom wall, sliding down until I sat directly on the hardwood, gasping for air.
Who was this woman? And more importantly, what had Alejandro done?
My mind raced back over the eight years of our marriage, picking apart every trip to Monterrey, Puebla, and Mexico City. The late nights at the office, the sudden business expansions, the cold distance that had grown between us like weeds in an unmaintained garden. He wasn’t just cheating. This wasn’t a casual affair or a weekend indiscretion hidden in a hotel room. This was something far darker, something that required a physical anchor hidden inside the very bed where we slept every single night.
With trembling fingers, I reached back into the mattress and pulled out the remaining packages. There were three in total. Each one wrapped in heavy moisture-proof sheeting and layers of industrial tape. The second package contained a small collection of jewelry—a silver charm bracelet, a gold ring with an engraved date, and a cracked smartphone that refused to turn on. The third package held a small ledger book filled with handwritten financial entries, wire transfer receipts, and dates spanning back nearly four years.
