Part Two of the Story… 👇
The weight of the dog against my knees felt heavier than any rescue I had ever managed in my brief career. As I sat there in the churned-up red dirt of that desolate Florida yard, stroking the scarred, matted fur along his neck, the harsh afternoon sun seemed to lose its edge. For several minutes, neither of us moved. The owner, Mr. D., stood a few yards away, shifting his weight uncomfortably from one boot to the other, muttering something about property rights and nuisance ordinances before retreating hastily into the shadow of his dilapidated porch and slamming the screen door behind him. He clearly assumed that cutting the chain was the end of the matter, that I would simply load the emaciated animal into my vehicle and haul him off to the county shelter like so much discarded trash.
He had no idea what was actually hidden under the floorboards of that rusted shed, nor did he understand the kind of legal storm that was about to break over his head.
I carefully unclipped the heavy, rusted remnant of the tractor chain from the leather collar, slipping my fingers underneath the stiff band to ease the pressure against his infected skin. The dog flinched once, a pathetic little shudder running through his skeletal frame, but he didn’t snap or growl. He simply leaned heavier into my lap, letting out a long, shuddering sigh that seemed to carry years of accumulated sorrow. I scooped my arms under his chest and hindquarters, lifting his fragile body with a gentleness born of professional habit, and carried him past the stagnant water bowls and the trampled earth toward the air-conditioned cab of my animal control pickup truck.
He didn’t put up a fight. He rested his chin on my right arm, his dark, soulful eyes staring straight ahead as I settled him onto a thick, folded moving blanket on the passenger seat. I cranked the air conditioning up to cool the stifling interior and immediately placed an emergency call to our chief veterinarian, Dr. Alan Vance, instructing him to prep the trauma surgical suite for an immediate triage evaluation.
