[The Cost of Control]

Part Two of the Story… 👇

The digital clock on the nightstand blinked brightly at 6:30 a.m. when the familiar, heavy footsteps of my mother-in-law echoed down the upstairs hallway. For three years, that sound had signaled my cue to scramble out of bed, tie back my hair, and rush down to the kitchen to brew fresh artisanal coffee while flipping pancakes for a man who rarely looked at me and a woman who constantly found flaws in my housekeeping. This morning, however, the house was dead silent, save for the rhythmic humming of the refrigerator.

I stood by the window in the guest room downstairs, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit and a wide-brimmed black fedora that neatly concealed my freshly shaved head. My luggage was already packed and zipped tightly in the trunk of my company-issued SUV parked in the driveway. I watched through the blinds as Margaret shuffled into the kitchen, expecting the warm aroma of breakfast, only to be met by cold granite counters and an empty coffee pot.

Upstairs, the sound of cupboard doors slamming open followed shortly after. A minute later, heavy footsteps pounded down the staircase, and my husband, David, stumbled into the kitchen, his tie half-knotted and his face twisted in annoyance.
