The Birthday He Thought He Had Ruined
A few months later, Emily’s ninth birthday arrived.
Ben had been afraid of that day.
He kept saying he wanted to make it special.
But he didn’t know how.
So I planned a small celebration at home.
Nothing extravagant.
Just balloons, cake, and a few of Emily’s favorite people.
When Ben came home from work, Emily ran toward him.
“Dad!”
He dropped his bag and hugged her.
“Happy birthday, sweetheart.”
She smiled.
“You came home!”
He closed his eyes.
I saw the tears before he could hide them.
That evening, after everyone left, Ben and I sat on the porch.
The house was quiet.
Emily was asleep upstairs.
He looked at me.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For not giving up on me.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“I was angry.”
“I know.”
“I was hurt.”
“I know.”
“But I never stopped loving you.”
He reached for my hand.
“I never stopped loving you either.”
We sat there for a long time.
Then he said something that stayed with me.
“I thought being a good husband meant making sure you never had to worry.”
I looked at him.
“And now?”
He smiled sadly.
“Now I think being a good husband means letting you worry with me.”
I squeezed his hand.
“That’s better.”
