How to Prevent Sheets from Balling Up in the Dryer

There’s nothing more frustrating than opening the dryer expecting warm, fluffy sheets and finding a giant, twisted ball of fabric instead.

The outside may feel dry, while the sheets hidden in the middle are still damp. Then you have to untangle everything, restart the dryer, and wonder why this keeps happening.

Fortunately, sheets balling up in the dryer is usually caused by a few simple factors, and there are several easy ways to prevent it.

Why Do Sheets Ball Up in the Dryer?

Sheets are large, lightweight pieces of fabric. As the dryer drum rotates, they can wrap around smaller items or fold into themselves.

Once that happens, the sheets may form a tight bundle that prevents warm air from circulating properly.

Several things can make the problem worse:

  • Overloading the dryer
  • Mixing sheets with too many other clothes
  • Washing or drying multiple large sheets together
  • Putting fitted sheets in the dryer with their elastic corners loose
  • Using an overly long or aggressive drying cycle
  • Not separating items before putting them in the dryer

The good news is that you don’t need a special appliance or expensive gadget to solve the problem.

1. Don’t Overload the Dryer

This is one of the easiest fixes.

A dryer needs enough room for laundry to move freely through the drum. If it’s packed tightly with sheets, towels, and clothing, the fabrics have less room to tumble and are more likely to twist together.

Instead of stuffing everything in at once, give large bedding items plenty of space.

For especially large sheets, drying them separately can make a noticeable difference.

2. Dry Sheets Separately

If you’re constantly finding your sheets tangled around towels and clothing, try drying the bedding by itself.

Sheets can easily wrap around smaller garments, while towels can become trapped inside the folds.

Drying similar-sized items together allows the load to tumble more evenly.

For a queen- or king-size sheet set, consider drying the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases in a separate load if your dryer tends to tangle them badly.

3. Shake the Sheets Before Putting Them in the Dryer
