7. Air-Drying & Evaporation — 24–48 Hours
Leave the ornaments to dry naturally in a well-ventilated room.
After approximately 12 hours, gently flip each ornament over.
Flipping the pieces allows both sides to dry more evenly and helps reduce curling or warping.
Allow the ornaments to continue drying until they are completely hard.
Estimated drying time: 24–48 hours.
8. Smooth & Seal — Final Step
Once the ornaments are completely dry and firm, inspect the edges for rough areas.
If necessary, gently smooth the edges using 400-grit ultra-fine sandpaper.
Next, apply a thin protective coating using either:
- Mod Podge
- Clear acrylic craft spray
Allow the protective coating to dry completely.
Finally, thread ribbon, string, or twine through the hanging hole and display your finished ornaments.
Creative Variations
Pressed Botanical Inlays
For a natural botanical effect, place a tiny dried leaf or pressed flower onto freshly cut dough.
Gently roll over it once with a rolling pin so that the botanical material becomes embedded into the surface.
Allow the ornament to dry completely.
This creates a delicate botanical detail within the translucent ornament.
Gilded Stained-Glass Edges
For a more elegant stained-glass appearance, add a thin metallic border around the outer edge of each completely dried and sealed ornament.
Use:
- Gold paint for a warm, traditional effect
- Silver paint for a cooler, modern effect
Apply the metallic paint carefully along the edges to create the appearance of stained-glass leading.
Display Ideas
Once finished, these translucent ornaments can be used in several ways:
- Sunlit window ornaments: Hang them where natural light can pass through.
- Holiday decorations: Add ribbons and hang them on a Christmas tree.
- Decorative garlands: String several shapes together.
- Gift decorations: Attach one to a wrapped present.
- Seasonal décor: Create different pastel colors for spring, summer, autumn, or winter themes.
For the strongest translucent effect, place the ornaments somewhere they can receive natural sunlight from behind.
