Neighbor Gave Me a Bag of These… What Are They, and How Do You Eat Them?
At first glance, these unusual little objects might look like something from another world. With their dark shells and wing-like horns, many people are surprised when they discover them in a bag of harvested fruits or at a local market. Commonly known as Bat Nuts or Water Caltrops, these fascinating seeds come from an aquatic plant that grows in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving waterways.
The name “Bat Nut” comes from its distinctive shape. The curved horns resemble the wings of a bat, giving the seed an appearance that is both striking and mysterious. In some regions of Asia, these nuts have been harvested and enjoyed for centuries as a traditional food.
Although the outer shell is extremely hard and not edible, the kernel inside can be eaten after proper preparation. The nuts are usually boiled, steamed, or roasted until the inner flesh becomes tender. Once cooked, the edible part has a mildly sweet, nutty flavor and a texture similar to chestnuts or potatoes.
